Coalition for Human Rights at ExxonMobil
ExxonMobil agreed with a coalition of shareholders in April 2004 to take new steps to respect human and labor rights on a global basis in its workplaces and in the communities in which it does business.
In return for the coalition withdrawing a shareholder proposal at the May 2004 annual meeting of the company, ExxonMobil agreed to include in its 2004 Corporate Citizenship Report a statement of its intent to uphold the core labor standards set forth by the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles at Work. The company also agreed to institute a regular dialogue and information sharing process with the coalition.
The ILO Declaration includes the following principles: freedom of association and effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining, elimination of all forms of forced or compulsory labor, effective abolition of child labor, and elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
The coalition, which includes the United Steelworkers, is determined to hold ExxonMobil to its promises. It will meet with the company regularly and use this web site and other appropriate communication tools to report the company’s progress.
